Gianna Beretta Molla (1922-1962) was raised in a large Catholic family, developing a strong prayer life and trust in God’s providence from a young age. After graduating from medical school in 1949, Gianna undertook further specialisation studies in Pediatrics.

Gianna met Piotro Molla in 1954 and they married the following year. In 1961, during her fourth pregnancy, doctors discovered that Gianna had a uterine fibroma. She had three options - an abortion, a hysterectomy, or removal of the fibroma, with the potential of further complications.

Gianna took the third and only option which would save the life of her baby. The child's life was saved but Gianna continued to experience complications throughout her pregnancy. Realising she may lose her life during delivery, she expressed to her family, "If you must decide between me and the child, do not hesitate: choose the child. I insist on it. Save the baby." Gianna Emanuela was born in April 1962. A week later, amid excruciating pain and after repeated exclamations of “Jesus, I love you,” Gianna passed away.

Throughout her life Gianna modelled faith, hope, fortitude and sacrificial love. Her husband and children were present at her canonisation in 2004. Gianna is attributed for a few miracles, including in 2003 when the pregnant Elizabeth Comparini was told the chance of her baby’s survival was little to none. Elizabeth prayed to Gianna and miraculously gave birth to a healthy baby. St Gianna is the patron saint of mothers, physicians, and unborn children.
